Print & Graphic Design

Assembly Advertisement

Overview

Assembly, an Orlando Arts Collective, needed a call for artists advertisement to be featured in TakeDown Magazine. By this point in time Assembly had grown from 5 members to 10, and was looking for artists to help out with larger and more elaborate shows and concepts.

Solution

By engaging the viewer immediately with a simple and humorous graphic—one of an absurd drug deal scene in which creativity and love are exchanged—we captured attention with a joke and intrigued viewers to read the rest of the advertisement. This solution works well because it uses humor to get attention, and we think that it's with humor that information travels the fastest through.

Cut and Paste Show Promotions

Overview

The Cut & Paste Paper Exhibition would provide attendees an opportunity to see paper used in sculptures, installations, and live performances, as well as an interactive area where people could make and display their own paper based art in a collective collage. With that idea in mind, we set out to design a promotional piece that would have two uses: advertising the upcoming show and providing a substrate that could be turned into a piece of art and taken home by patrons.

Solution

We designed the Cut & Paste promotion to advertise the show, serve as a frame for art in a collective collage and be memento that could decorated and taken home. Printed on the front was both a tag-line and instructions for the flyer reading "Cut it Out." This way, the content could be removed from the piece making it work as a frame. With a hand-lettered logo and a fun illustration of scissors and glue, we really enjoyed designing this particular pieceand made some great art and friends at the show.

Layers 3D Art show Promotions

Overview

The concept for Layers 3D Art Show was to mix art and music in an environment where artist's 2D works were created in or reproduced to be 3D and viewed with vintage red and blue 3D glasses. It was this the feeling of the vintage red and blue glasses that Assembly wanted to impart on the promotions for this show.

Solution

Using a strong and provocative graphic symbol—a bouquet of knives—we created promotions that emotionally captured the vintage red and blue feeling associated with 3D glasses in an effective, iconographic manner. The promotions were viewable with 3D glasses, and an advertisement for the show ran in TakeDown Magazine—the primary sponsor of the event—and with that issue came the glasses for the event and a few teaser works of art [also viewable in 3D]. We provided a video installation at the show, as well as artwork and prints of the promotional posters.

Live Screen Printing Show Promotion

Overview

The Live Screen Print Show was a collaboration between Thronton Threads and Assembly. The idea for the show was to host a gallery of artists series apparel and provide an opportunity for people to either bring their own clothes or purchase apparel at the store and have custom graphics printed on their clothing on the spot.

Solution

For this promotion, we wanted to make something that, like the title of the show, was simple and to the point. An illustration was made depicting the creative process and production behind screen printing built into the shape of a t-shirt. Every aspect of the flyer was made completely by hand—even the type—communicating the idea that everything at the show would be unique, and from the artista themselves. We got a great response at the show, made some fantastic shirts and some really cool new friends. This was one of our favorite promotions to make, and a fun show to be a part of.

Overspray Show Promotions

Overview

One of Assembly's most attended shows to date, Overspray was a stencil art show featuring a unique gallery exhibition, live stencil art, on the spot clothing modification, live DJ and video installation, and free beer courtesy of the Orlando Brewery (where the event was held). Our task was to create promotions and visual marketing for the event that creatively communicated the aesthetics of the stencil art medium.

Solution

By designing the flyer to look as though it had already been stenciled, printing on heavy chipboard and making the graphic on the flier an actual stencil that could be cut out and used, we made the promotional piece a solid representation of stencil art. We then used visual merchandising to complete the effect by displaying the fliers in a cut open spray-paint can, creating a unified representation of what to expect at the show. We also helped set up the show, design stencils for clothing customization, and sell prints—all of which aided to a very successful event.

Paparazzi Party Promotions

Overview

The Paparazzi Party was a concept show themed around media saturated Paparazzi photography. Attendees were invited to partake in live photo-shoots where they were given props, costumes, and the freedom to be spontaneous and silly, while also partaking in a social commentary about self perception, vanity, and the "MySpace" internet culture. This was exactly what we aimed to capture in the promotions.

Solution

Since the show was photography based, we decided to use photography as the medium to communicate our concept. With this in mind, we created the promotions to be over glamorized, sleazy, and slightly offensive in the idea that the people on them looked like scene-kid celebrities. And it worked. In total there were 4 flyers produced, all with the same information on the back. The idea was that when scattered out on a table, they looked like a pile of vintage Polaroid photographs, reinforcing the aesthetics and concept of the show.

John Vanderslice Poster

Overview

It goes without saying, we like making stuff. When we heard that Vanderslice was coming to town, we all got very excited. And then we decided to make a poster. We wanted to capture the song "Up Above the Sea" visually, and make the poster almost completely by hand.

Solution

With the poster being made almost entirely by hand, it took an almost natural 60's lo-fi aesthetic. We cut the letters to Vanderslice's name out of construction paper, scanned in a photocopied songbird, and painted the show information. The only part of the process a computer was involved in was putting it all together. A nice departure from our usual pixel saturated world, this is one of our favorite pieces, for one of our favorite artists.

Etoile Advertisement

Overview

To make sure Etoile would get the Best of Orlando award for independently owned vintage and specialty shop, we needed to create an advertisement that would run in the local paper and work as a separately printed promotional piece.

Solution

We decided to use a bird illustration as the centerpiece graphic for this particular promotional piece in keeping with the last one we designed for Etoile. This time we decided to have the bird dressed up, with their slogan "Handmade with Love" printed on the birds t-shirt. The background and graphics were made to look hand-screened, and focused on a more nature-based color scheme. The type treatment for body copy was done by hand to resemble embroidery and reinforce the handmade aesthetic. The advertisement ran in the local paper while the promotion was left at various locations around town. Etoile received the Best of Orlando award for independently owned vintage and specialty shop, and Easily Amused got to help promote local artists and store that we love to shop at.

Etoile Boutique Promotion

Overview

When Etoile Boutique first opened, we were asked to create a promotion for the store that would establish their brand and inform customers, designers and artists as to what the store was and what they specialized in. Being artists and designers ourselves we were happy to oblige.

Solution

The thought of handmade designer clothing drove the feeling of this promotion. We decided to use a blue bird illustration and overlay an elegant pattern to represent fabric with handmade embroidery. An autumn color scheme was chosen for it's emotional warmth, nostalgia and reference to nature. The body copy was set using a refined light typewriter typeface to reinforce the handmade qualities of the products sold at the boutique. All of this together made the promotion informative, fun to look at and establish Etoile's initial look and feel.

Etoile Postcard

Overview

While working on a project for Etoile, an Orlando boutique that promotes local, handmade and under-the-radar designers and artists, we had some concept art and although wasn’t used for the initial project, we felt would work nicely as a postcard.

Solution

We created a self-mailing postcard from pre-existing concept art for Etoile. The post card concept was based around photography from their in-store LookBook, and some very nice textile textures that were to be originally used for another in-store promotional piece. While we don’t go around recycling every bit of design work we have, sometimes we do have happy accidents that can fill other uses quite nicely. The post card concept was a great example of this.

Holy Craft! Promotions

Overview

Etoile, an Orlando boutique that promotes local, handmade and under-the radar designers and artists was having a fashion show entitled Holy Craft. We were asked to design a promotion for the show that had an artistic, vintage-handmade appeal similar to the aesthetics of the products and artists that the boutique carried.

Solution

For the Holy Craft! promotion we decided to use a vintage fashion photograph as the centerpiece of the design. By photocopying the photograph and adding a splash of color we made the photograph fun while establishing a strong color scheme. The decorations in the background are halftone patters and threads and the title text was treated to be fun and crafty, and the body copy was set using a refined light typewriter typeface. This promotion was successful because it reinforced the handmade qualities of the products and artists that Etoile is famous for supporting. Our client was thrilled at the promotion, and the show got a fantastic response.
